This happens quite often. A tear-stained woman with bruises after being beaten. She is in a difficult situation, her husband abuses alcohol or other substances and exposes her and maybe even their children to domestic violence. She may have already filed for divorce, but one thing she can be sure of: When the reason for the divorce is domestic violence, the divorce is given right away.
Her story is similar to the stories of women survivors who have consulted with us over the years. She could be from Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East or Africa, often with limited knowledge of modern life, Western order and society. These women are united by one thing – the dream of a better life.
When marriage turns into a nightmare and the husband resorts to domestic violence, whether she is married to an ethnic Dane or a man of another nationality, that dream collapses with the marriage.
In such a situation, she, immediately, must take all precautions, especially if there are children in the marriage. If this story / situation sounds like yours – act now! Check your legal status with friends and colleagues. If they have been in Denmark for a long time – or they are Danes – they can probably give you advice.

When you feel like you’re at a dead end, it’s easy to seek advice in Denmark. It is more difficult to make an appointment, especially a short-term meeting with the social authorities. In such matters, it is not recommended to contact lawyers, since: firstly, their services are often very expensive, and secondly, this is not their specialization, because often in cases of divorce there are other problems that lawyers do not take into account, for example , the presence of joint minor children.
